Medical Crowdfunding Guide: How to Raise Money for Medical Expenses

2020 and 2021 are two years of unpredictability and challenges – even more so in 2022. It is another year for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and other humanitarian crises. Even with the programs by international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), many are still struggling to solve their health concerns and find the means to fund their medical spending.

Different Medical Expenses around the Globe

By the start of 2020, there are 40 infectious diseases already discovered. It gives more reasons for everyone to find the means to pay for medical bills. Medical bills are either for curing or prevention. Here’s a list of where people spend their money specific to their medical or health needs:

  • At-home medical spending. 86% of the US population takes vitamins or supplements daily. These vitamins average about $10 per pill. Multiply that by a year, you would need more than $3,000 to keep your health in shape.
  • Surgery and other hospital bills. Staying in the hospital while getting the medical help you need is expensive. This is the top reason why people resort to raising money for their medical bills.

Ways to Raise Money for Medical Needs

You may have heard of creative ways to raise money for their medical expenses. Here are some of them:

  • Hosting a friendly neighborhood fundraiser. It can be a small lemonade stand, bake sale, garage sale. or offering commissioned services. You raise money thru sales while supporters get to enjoy the goods you have offered. It is an enjoyable activity; but, it is time- and energy-consuming for everyone involved.
  • Reaching out to family and friends. Sending an email or message to your friends is more intimate and personal. This gives you a chance to explain your situation and encourage them to support your cause. Yet, this is also time-consuming and limited to your current network.
  • Partnering with local organizations. We have heard of many corporate social responsibility programs from different companies. Soliciting donations from them is easy with not much to work on. Finding the right company to partner with may be challenging. They only work with social projects related to their own company goals.
  • Crowdfunding. This method has gained popularity in recent years. Crowdfunding is the solicitation of money from a large number of people to raise funds. The most popular type for raising money for medical-related campaigns is donation-based crowdfunding. In this type, all funds collected go to the organizer with no returns expected.

Tips to Have a Successful Medical Crowdfunding

You’ve got to this point and now you’re ready to raise money to pay for your medical expenses. Lucky for you today, we have some great tips on having successful medical crowdfunding. These are from success stories within the Airfunding community.

  1. Cover photo. Your cover photo should be relevant and of high quality. It is best to avoid generic images. Look for interesting images that grab the attention of your target supporters.  Images are the first thing a prospective donor’s eyes see. If they don’t like them, they might not support your cause.
  2. Visual story. Show off your story visually. The specifics of your medical expenses in an infographic or table format will be a story on its own. It also shows your supporters where their donations will go.
  3. Eye-catching project title. Titles should be short, simple, and strong. Every word you use in your title needs to show the value of your campaign. Make your project title relevant and have its personality to stand out.
  4. Call-to-action words. Include some call-to-action words such as “Donate” or “Support.” This will prompt donors to take action and give you the money you need for your medical bills.
  5. Emotionally-appealing story. Donors support projects because they value and have a personal connection with the medical situation you are in. So, start typing that story to appeal to their emotions.
  6. Medical details. Your project story should include as much detail as you can for donors to support your cause. Your story should be able to answer this question at the end – “Why donate?”
  7. Sharing is the key. The closest people you have is your family and friends. So why not sit down with them and have a quick chat about your Airfunding medical project? Your connection with them is what will drive them to give.
  8. Widen your network. Find a group of people or organizations who advocate for the same medical cause you have. They may be more than willing to help you out.
  9. Be updated. Make sure to keep all your supporters in the loop. Provide more information and updates on your medical journey in a timely manner. Your supporters will be eager to donate more when they see these updates.

Verify your identity

Before Airfunding sends you your campaign funds, you are required to complete certain checks to verify your identity and information. This is done to prevent fraud and swindle and to ensure that supporters feel secure when deciding to support a project.

Simply input the information being requested in the menu “Bank Account Settings”. Enter the name of the bank account holder under the Bank Account Owner Field. If written in Thai, Chinese, or other characters, then rewrite your name in English. On the succeeding field, upload a picture where you are holding any identity card such as passport, driver’s license, or any government ID.

You may undergo identity verification at any period while your project is still active. It is recommended for you to do it as soon as possible to avoid forgetting.

Request for Withdrawal

In comparison to other crowdfunding platforms, Airfunding allows project owners to withdraw funds at any time as long as the amount you are requesting to withdraw is $100 or more. You may do this by tapping the request for a withdrawal button at the bottom of “My Project Page”.

The remaining funds which you haven’t received yet will be sent at the end of the project with the incurred 8% fees for the transfer and bank fees.

Currency of Funds

At the moment, Airfunding only supports US dollars. Hence, collected funds will be transferred in US dollars.

Transfer Process

The usual remittance method being utilized by Airfunding is Wise, but you may check out other options as well.

Through Wise

To complete the transfer, the project owner will be contacted through the email address provided at the Personal Identification menu and will verify your bank account information.

In the case that the money wasn’t successfully sent due to failure to follow the Wise instructions, the transfer will be cancelled and refunded to us.

Make sure that you follow the instructions in the email within the allotted time frame to avoid delays.

Through Paypal

Most of the transactions are done through Wise, but in the event that you need it in your Paypal account, this is also possible.

Register your PayPal email address in the Personal Identification menu and the collected funds may be transferred to the specified PayPal account.

Through Bank Account

In order to transfer the funds to your bank account, Airfunding will send you an email asking for the information needed.

Once all bank details are verified, Airfunding will process your request.

Collecting Funds

You may opt for any of the transfer methods mentioned above. However, for those countries without any remittance method available, you may discuss with the Airfunding staff an alternative payment method. The most used option for this case is to use a receiving account (yours or from a close person) that is registered in a country with an available remittance method.

To know more details about collection of funds, you may read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) here.

What If I Failed to Apply an Online Loan and How to Find Quick Loans

With the pandemic, it can be challenging to find sources of income. It also seems to be much more challenging to borrow money. In many cases, we seek out help from family or friends, but despite good intentions, this can often lead to uncomfortable situations. As a result, quick loans are becoming increasingly popular among people.

Read more to learn about tips on how to apply for online, quick loans.

Decide how much to borrow

You have to keep in mind that when you borrow money, you also have to pay for the interest. Ensure that you can afford the payments on the amount you do borrow.

Think through and check if borrowing is necessary. Are you borrowing for the education of your children or simply to avail the latest phone? Overextending yourself financially is the worst thing you can do if it would have been better to wait for your finances to improve.

Check your local banks

Looking up the local banks online is the easiest way for you to land online loans. Once you have familiarized yourself with the existing local banks, view their website and the types of loans they are offering. You must also consider other factors, including the interest rate, repayment terms, collateral and guarantor requirements, approval time, and income requirements. Furthermore, read the terms and conditions for you to fully grasp the type of loan you are committing yourself to.

Prepare requirements

As you decide on the bank where you will apply for quick loans, you need to take into account the eligibility requirements. Aside from looking at the interest rate, you wouldn’t want to be hassled with getting various requirements especially if you immediately need the money.

Different types of loans have varying eligibility requirements. Hence, you must properly read all terms of the bank. There are some that will require you to go to the physical bank while for some, the whole process can be done virtually.
With online quick loans, borrowers have more options than ever before, thanks to the convenience and ease of online lending. Even if you have bad credit, these sites offer the easiest way to get a loan online.

By following the above-listed steps and doing your due diligence in researching, you will be able to find the right quick loans for you.

In the case that you are not eligible for any quick loans from your local banks or your application was denied, you may opt to check out these options:

Use collateral

Try to identify the reason why your loan application was denied and offer to pledge something of equal or greater value than the loan amount to help secure the loan. This might help for your quick loans to get approved. However, you have to remember that this is going to be a big loss on your end if you fail to return the borrowed money.

Family loans

If all else fails, you can bypass the traditional lending requirements by borrowing from your relatives. The best way to do this is by creating a loan agreement. Despite being related by blood, it’s best to see all terms on paper and not just through a verbal agreement. As mentioned above, the downside of this is that it can potentially ruin relationships in the event that you can’t repay the loan.

Grants and Scholarships

If the quick loans you are applying for are education-related, consider applying for grants and scholarships. Similarly, if you need funding for your business, check for grant programs in your local government.

Crowdfunding

Apart from the above-mentioned options, we’ve recommended in this guide, one of the best and most trusted available options for you to raise money for whatever you need is by using crowdfunding platforms.

Instead of applying for quick loans, you may create a project on any of the available crowdfunding websites. You just have to ensure that it provides support in your county. One of the available crowdfunding platforms that offer support to almost 200 countries is Airfunding.

A proof of how crowdfunding platforms work is the story of Mariz. Mariz created a project to raise funds for her Mama Leony’s hospital expenses. At the time of posting the project, Mama Leony was in the hospital for more than a month with a running bill of 2.3 million pesos. By the end of the project, their family was able to raise ₱76,990.50.

Where can I post fundraisers for nonprofits

There are several charity fundraising options available online. In fact, according to the research group Nonprofit Research Collaborative, around 82% of nonprofits host fundraising events in order to raise awareness for causes and secure funds.

To give you an idea on how to raise funds, we have listed different fundraising activities which you can organize.

Fundraising Ideas

A-thon and fun run events

Over the years, a-thon events for a cause have become popular as a form of charity fundraising. It is the go-to option of fundraisers because individuals feel their involvement with the cause since they are physically present.

Walk-athon, hike-a-thon, fun runs, and walks are good options especially if you have minimal budgets. However, the returns for your investment in organizing such events is highly dependent on your promotions. Smaller organizations may find it tough to deliver high return compared to bigger ones.

Auction

Auction is another option for fundraisers for nonprofits. It is not an upfront, hard push for raising funds, but a subtle way of incorporating it into another event. For this activity, you may organize a meet and greet for members of the nonprofit organization and allot a portion of the program to the auction.

This activity will attract more potential donors because they get to appreciate more lending their money since they have something to take home with them. It’s going to feel like spending more than donating. More than the value for money, bonds and ties within your organization will be stronger.

One of the most effective ways to bolster the scope of your event, attract more potential donors, and get supporters to spend more money at an event is by incorporating a live or silent auction. An auction fundraising event not only gives your guests a reason to open their wallets, it also gives them something to do while socializing. It also gives your employees something to talk to your guests about during the meet and greets.

Discussing items to be auctioned off gives you an easy tie-in to the fundraising component of the event without having to ask for a direct donation in person.

Auctions yield high returns on investment for midsize organizations and are easier to plan. For small organizations the return on investment is relatively good but requires more planning. For larger organizations planning auctions are difficult to plan with little return on investment.

Art Exhibit

Somehow similar to the nature of an auction, a charity art exhibit is an opportunity for members to take part in the cause by creating an output. You might be wondering where the fundraising comes in with this idea. It is pretty easy because you just have to tap a pool of local artists who want to showcase their work for a small entry free. You may opt to invite a professional artist to judge their work.

Since this is a contest, you will have to provide prizes for the winners. Since you are doing charity fundraising, it’s best to partner with other organizations and companies for sponsorships for the prizes for winners. You may also sell the work of the artists if they are interested and share a percentage of their sale to the organization.

However, not all people are appreciative of art, so it can be challenging to find the niche people for this activity.

Crafting your plan

Fundraisers for non profits require rigorous planning. These events may generate revenue, but will really require manpower, financial preparations, and time. Hence, it’s best to do an initial research and survey if your selected charity fundraising activity will be feasible to conduct.

Apart from these ideas, you may also opt to set-up via crowdfunding which requires minimal effort from your end. This may serve as your main fund source or a passive additional pooling of funds.

Airfunding is one of the existing crowdfunding platforms online which has a proven track record of helping nonprofit organizations.

Take MedEnforceKZ’s project as an example. They aimed to raise funds through various fundraisers, organized academic courses, and online workshops and seminars in order to buy medical supplies and resources for hospitals in Kazakhstan. They used Airfunding as one of their ways to raise funds alongside other initiatives. Their goal was to raise $250, but support came flooding in and they were able to claim $660.
